Sad news of Eric's passing!
A great friend of our club and members, KG9GH has been an ever-present participant in many antenna projects, and was the organizer of our HAT Team (Ham Assistance Team) some years back. He was always there for Field Day, club events and fundraisers, and anywhere a fellow ham needed a hand. Several years ago Eric had to pull back a little because of his cardiac issues, but remained an active member of Tri-County ARES and club events.
Eric was cherished by many and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Eric is survived by his wife Cheryl Janssen; children: Bobbi (Aaron) Hubert, Andrew (Michelle) Janssen, Dawn (Nathanael) Edlbeck; grandchildren: Riley Hubert, Parker Hubert, Charlie Janssen, Wyatt Janssen, Levi Edlbeck, Lucille Edlbeck, Elizabeth Edlbeck and Eleanor Edlbeck; parents: Marilyn Janssen and Paul (Aurelia) Janssen; siblings: Amy (Travis) Jacquet and Chad (Kris) Janssen; niece and nephew: Josh (Kerry) Jacquet and Samantha (Peter) Covach; along with many other loving relatives.
Visitation will be held at New Life Church (810 Frontage Rd, Peshtigo, WI,) on Sunday, September 14, 2025 from 1 until 2 p.m. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m., with a light reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DAR Boys and Girls Club.
Thank you Connie (KE9ALV)
For a WONDERFUL celebration of Arde - KA9WAR!
Thanks to Connie (KE9ALV) for putting together a fantastic event for Arde Nelson (KA9WAR)! Though I didn't get a head count, there must have been about 50 or so friends, family and Ham Radio operators to join in with some great stories, conversations and buffet at the Coral restaurant in Peshtigo yesterday (9/06/2025)! Somehow my photo of the guest of honor did not work out, so I have used one of my favorites from field day a couple years ago!
This event was a wonderful chance to get together and celebrate the 103 years that make this man so honored by so many. It was also a chance to thank him for his many years of service to his family, country, friends, community and Ham Radio - sharing his love, strength , talents and knowledge with all that know him! We are all blessed and honored to be counted as friends!

"We get so sophisticated and we have gotten so used to the reliability and resilience in our wireless and wired and our broadcast industry and all of our public safety communications, that we can never fathom that they’ll fail. They do. They have. They will. I think a strong Amateur Radio community [needs to be] plugged into these plans."
—Craig Fugate, FEMA Administrator (2009-2017), 3 May 2011
Amateur Radio Included in FEMA Guide for National Emergency Preparedness
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released a final version (March 2023) of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Functional Guidance. The guidance, which provides a framework for communications resources within incident management, officially includes support from amateur radio operators. The expanded Communications Unit (COMU) structure now includes the Auxiliary Communicator (AUXC) role, which covers personnel from services that provide communications support to emergency management, public safety, and other government agencies. This includes amateur radio.
NIMS guides government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to work together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters and other emergencies. “This is a major step in the recognition of the need and usefulness of amateur radio and other communications services in our national preparedness,” said Josh Johnston, KE5MHV, Director of Emergency Management for ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio®. “It also gives official guidance to pave the way for future training and education of volunteers in ARRL’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service® (ARES®),” Johnston added.
The NIMS ICT guide (PDF) is available at https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_ict-functional-guidance.pdf.
ARES Membership Requirements
Every licensed amateur regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Training may be required or desired to participate fully in ARES. Please inquire at the local level for specific information. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio program, only licensed radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable but is not a requirement for membership.
